Schulte table benefits: what they train, and what they don't

Type "Schulte table benefits" into a search engine and you get two kinds of answers: vague promises ("boosts brain power!") and cautious silence. Neither helps. So here is the honest version: what a Schulte table measurably trains, what the evidence supports only weakly, and what it does not do at all - no matter how many times you repeat it.

What a Schulte table is, in one paragraph

A square grid, usually 5×5, with the numbers 1 to 25 scattered at random. The task: find them in order, as fast as you can, ideally without moving your eyes from the center. It was introduced by the German psychiatrist Walter Schulte as a test of attention, not as a training tool - the training use came later, when people noticed that scores improve quickly with practice. Benefit 1: sustained attention on a boring task

The first and most reliable effect. A Schulte table is monotonous by design: no story, no reward, just digits. Holding your focus on it for 30-60 seconds, then again, then again, trains exactly the thing that fails when you drift off in the middle of a page. Attention researchers call it sustained attention or vigilance, and it is one of the three attention networks described by Posner and Petersen. Of all the things a Schulte table does, this one shows up fastest: most people see their time drop by a third within two weeks.

Benefit 2: a wider useful field of view

When you keep your gaze on the center and still find the "17" in the corner, you are using peripheral vision to read digits - something reading and screens rarely ask of you. The zone in which you can pick out detail without moving your eyes is called the useful field of view (UFOV), and it is trainable: the large ACTIVE trial (Ball et al., 2002) used speed-of-processing exercises built on the same principle and found gains that persisted for years in older adults. Benefit 3: faster visual search

Finding a target among distractors is a skill of its own, and it improves with practice - fewer wasted fixations, quicker rejection of non-targets. This is the mechanism speed-reading courses are after when they hand out Schulte tables: not "reading faster" as such, but scanning a page more efficiently. The effect on actual reading is modest, because reading is limited by comprehension, not by eye speed (Rayner et al., 2016). The effect on scanning tables, dashboards, code or a shelf in a shop is more direct.

Benefit 4: attention switching - with the Gorbov variant

The red-black Gorbov-Schulte table adds a rule: black numbers ascending, red numbers descending, alternating. That turns a search task into a task-switching task, and switching is what breaks down first when you are tired or overloaded. Benefit 5: a number you can track

This one is underrated. Attention is hard to feel; a stopwatch is not. A Schulte table gives you a clean, repeatable measurement: same grid size, same rules, one number. That makes it a useful thermometer - for how well you slept, how much coffee is too much, whether a new work routine helps. Tracking is also what keeps people practising. What the table does not do

  • It does not raise your IQ or "brain power". Reviews of brain training (Simons et al., 2016) are consistent: you get better at the trained task and at tasks that look like it, and much less at anything else. A Schulte table is no exception.
  • It does not diagnose or treat attention disorders. A slow time confirms nothing and a fast one rules out nothing. If your attention worries you, the right address is a specialist.
  • It does not replace sleep. No exercise repairs a tired attention system; it only measures it.

Put simply: the benefits are real, specific and measurable - and they stay close to the task. That is not a weakness. A tool that does one thing well is exactly what most of us need for five minutes a day.
