Black numbers ascending. Red numbers descending. Alternating, no mistakes, against the clock. The Gorbov-Schulte table is the most demanding variant of the classic grid and one of the few simple tools that targets a specific, measurable cognitive function: attention switching.
Where the red-black table comes from
The variant is attributed to Fyodor D. Gorbov, a Soviet psychologist working in aviation medicine and the space program, who developed the red-black grid in the late 1950s as a tool for testing operators - people whose job is to constantly shift attention between streams of information. The table became a fixture of Soviet and Russian occupational psychodiagnostics: pilots, train drivers and dispatchers were tested with it, and in the literature it lives on as the "red-black Gorbov-Schulte table".
Why attention switching is so hard
Every time you jump between tasks, you pay a tax. Cognitive psychology calls it the switch cost: after a rule change, responses are slower and more error-prone, even when you know both rules perfectly. Stephen Monsell published the classic review of this phenomenon in Trends in Cognitive Sciences (2003). The Gorbov table forces exactly that jump on every single move: ascending → descending, black → red, and back.
Its clinically validated Western cousin is the Trail Making Test part B (Reitan), which alternates numbers and letters. Neuropsychologists have used TMT-B for decades to assess cognitive flexibility - and the load mechanism is the same as in the red-black table.
How the Gorbov table is performed
The canonical format is a 7×7 grid: 25 black numbers (1-25) and 24 red ones (1-24).
- Black numbers go ascending: 1, 2, 3…
- Red numbers go descending: 24, 23, 22…
- Alternate: black 1 → red 24 → black 2 → red 23 → …
- Measure the total time and the number of mistakes.
A typical adult needs several times longer than on a plain 5×5 - and that is normal. The growing gap between your "plain" and "switching" times says more than either number alone: it is a direct measure of your switch cost.

- Vigilance professions - drivers, operators, dispatchers: the work is constant context switching.
- Gamers and athletes - rapidly changing targets and rules under time pressure is the essence of both worlds.
- Anyone who "multitasks" - switch-cost research is the best argument against working across three windows at once; table training at least teaches you what that juggling really costs.
- Anyone bored with the classic table - Gorbov is the natural "next level" once your 5×5 drops below ~25 seconds.
How to start
Don't start with Gorbov. First get the classic 5×5 under ~30 seconds, then move to red-black - otherwise frustration kills consistency.
