Most people who "tried Schulte tables and nothing happened" made the same mistake: they scanned the grid row by row like a spreadsheet. That is a reading exercise, not an attention exercise. The method works only when it is done a specific way - and the way takes two minutes to learn.
Step 1: sit down properly
Put the table (paper or screen) about 30-40 cm from your eyes, straight ahead, so that the whole grid fits comfortably in your view without turning your head. Good, even light; no music with lyrics; phone notifications off. This sounds fussy, but a Schulte table measures attention, and attention is exactly what a buzzing phone steals.
Step 2: fix your gaze on the center
This is the rule that makes or breaks the exercise. Look at the middle cell and keep looking at it. Find the numbers with your peripheral vision - the edge of your sight - not by moving your eyes to each cell. At first this feels impossible and your eyes will drift; that is normal. The drift shrinks within a few sessions, and that shrinking is the training: you are widening your useful field of view.
Two aids for beginners: choose a table with a marked center point (a dot in the middle cell - our generator has that option), and start with a smaller grid, 4×4, where the corners are closer to the center.
Step 3: find the numbers in order - silently
Locate 1, then 2, then 3, up to 25. On paper, point with a finger or simply know where the number is and move on; on a screen, tap. Don't say the numbers out loud and don't nod along - subvocalising slows you down and pulls attention away from the search. If you lose a number, don't panic-scan; keep the gaze centered and let the periphery find it.
Step 4: time every round
Use a stopwatch, or let the app do it. The time is your only feedback, and the exercise without feedback quickly becomes a ritual with no direction. Write the number down - a note on the phone, a printed sheet with a date line, whatever you will actually keep. Here is what your time means: roughly, under 40 seconds on a 5×5 is average for an adult, under 30 is good, and what matters most is your own trend.
Step 5: keep sessions short
5-10 minutes, 5-8 tables, once a day. Attention is a limited resource; after ten minutes the times get worse, not better, and you start training fatigue instead of focus. Stop while it still feels easy. Daily short sessions beat a weekly marathon - the effect comes from repetition, not from heroics.
Step 6: progress deliberately
When a 5×5 table takes you under 30 seconds consistently, make it harder - one change at a time:
- a bigger grid: 6×6, then 7×7,
- a different content: letters instead of digits, or roman numerals,
- handicaps: rotated cells, irregular gaps, a printed watermark,
- the Gorbov variant: red and black numbers, ascending and descending alternately - a different exercise entirely.

The five mistakes that waste your time
- Reading row by row. The exercise becomes visual reading; the useful field of view gets no training at all.
- Memorising the table. Every round needs a new grid. Reusing one sheet turns the task into recall. Print sets of ten or let the app shuffle.
- No timing. Without a number there is no feedback and no progress you can see.
- Marathons. Twenty minutes of tables trains tiredness. Ten is the limit.
- Comparing with others. A friend's 25 seconds tells you nothing; your 44 becoming 35 tells you everything.
Paper or app?
Both work; they suit different situations. Paper is perfect for therapy rooms, classrooms, children and anyone avoiding screens - print a free set of ten tables or build your own in the generator. Whichever you pick, the rules above are the whole method. Center gaze, order, stopwatch, short sessions, a fresh grid every time. Everything else is decoration.
