A single Schulte table test tells you where you stand. This plan tells you how to get from your first measurement to a visibly better score in four weeks - at 5-10 minutes a day, with no equipment more expensive than a sheet of paper. The progression is simple: baseline first, then technique, then handicaps, and finally a retest that shows in black and white whether it worked.
Rules for the whole month
Three rules apply from the first day to the last:
- Short, but daily. Research on spaced practice (Cepeda et al., 2006) is unambiguous: the same number of minutes spread across many days produces a more durable effect than one long marathon. 5-10 minutes a day beats an hour once a week.
- Track the median, not the record. A single round can lie in both directions. Do 3-5 rounds and record the middle result - that's your form.
- Measurement hygiene. The same time of day, after a full night's sleep, phone in another room. Sleep isn't just recovery: the brain consolidates a freshly practiced skill during sleep (Walker et al., 2002), so an evening session plus a night of sleep is effectively part of the training.
Week 1 - baseline: measure before you improve
The goal this week is a reliable reference point, not speed. Every day, 3-5 rounds of the classic 5×5; write the median down. By the end of the week you have 5-7 medians - their middle is your baseline.

Important: don't change your technique yet this week. You're measuring what you have.
Week 2 - the center technique
Now the only "big" change of the entire plan: keep your gaze on the center of the board and stop scanning row by row. Catch the numbers peripherally and move your eyes as little as possible. What you're training this way is the so-called useful field of view - the area you actually extract information from in a single glance. Ball and colleagues (1988) showed that this field shrinks under load and with age - and that it responds to training.
The first days will be slower than your baseline - that's normal and expected. Usually between day four and day seven the technique "clicks" and your times drop below the old baseline.
Week 3 - bigger grids and handicaps
Once the technique sits, you add load - always one element at a time:
- Days 1-2: a 6×6 grid instead of 5×5 - a longer distance, the same technique.
- Days 3-4: letters instead of numbers, or rotated symbols - reading each cell costs more.
- Days 5-7: shuffling - the board reshuffles after every hit, so memorizing the layout stops working.

Week 4 - Gorbov and the retest
The final ingredient: the Gorbov-Schulte table - counting red numbers ascending and black descending, alternately. This is no longer pure search but attention switching - and every switch has a measurable time cost (Monsell, 2003). Days 1-5: one Gorbov round plus two regular rounds a day.
Days 6-7: the retest. Same conditions as in week 1 - time of day, sleep, phone behind a wall - 5 rounds of 5×5, median. Compare it with your baseline. If you train in the app, you'll see the form trend and error analysis on a chart - no notebook required.

What to expect - and what comes next
A realistic result for the month is fifteen to twenty-some percent off your median - the center technique contributes the most, the handicaps add the rest. Don't expect table training to make you "smarter" across the board: what you're improving is visual search speed and control over your own attention - the skill that decides how quickly you find information on a screen, in a document or on a dashboard.
After the month, 2-3 sessions a week are enough to maintain the effect. Keep rotating variants so the task doesn't become automatic - and repeat the retest every few weeks under the same conditions. It's the measurement, not the impression, that tells you whether your form is improving.
