A simple grid of numbers with a biography worthy of a film: a psychiatrist's office, the Soviet space program, speed-reading courses and modern e-sports. Here are five facts about Schulte tables that surprise even people who have trained on them for years.
1. It's not a "logic game" - it's a psychiatrist's tool
The tables weren't born as entertainment. Walter Schulte, a German psychiatrist, used numbered grids to assess patients' attention: search speed, concentration and fatigability. A plain sheet of paper replaced laboratory equipment - and that very simplicity is why the method has survived more than half a century practically unchanged. To this day you'll find the tables in psychodiagnostics textbooks, not in the sudoku aisle.
2. The red-black version was developed with pilots and cosmonauts in mind
The most demanding variant - the red-black Gorbov-Schulte table - came out of Soviet aviation psychology. Fyodor Gorbov, a psychologist working in aviation medicine and the space program, needed a tool for testing people whose work is nonstop switching of attention between instruments: pilots, operators, later cosmonaut candidates. Black numbers ascending, red descending, alternating - you can print exactly that test for free today.
3. Speed-reading courses have used them for decades - for good reasons
Reading isn't gliding along a line; it's a series of jumps (saccades) and stops (fixations) during which you see only a dozen or so characters sharply - the periphery fills in the rest. This is one of the best-documented facts in reading research (review: Rayner, 1998). Schulte tables train exactly that machinery: holding your gaze at one point and fishing out information with the corner of your eye. That's why they've been a fixture of speed-reading courses for decades - as a field-of-view exercise, not a magic trick.
4. Gamers and athletes train the same thing - just at a higher price
Fast visual search for a target among distractors is daily bread for a chess player scanning a position and an FPS player watching for an enemy. Green and Bavelier's research (Nature, 2003) showed that demanding action games genuinely improve visual selective attention - the same function a Schulte table loads. The difference: a sheet of paper needs no graphics card, and the stopwatch is mercilessly objective. Some sports-vision training programs use numbered grids for exactly this reason.
5. Paper still beats the screen - at least in therapy rooms
Therapists and educators keep printing tables instead of opening apps, and it isn't nostalgia. First, controlled conditions: same size, same distance, zero distractions. Second - the smartphone is itself a distractor: in Ward and colleagues' studies (2017), the mere presence of a phone on the desk reduced available cognitive capacity even when it was silenced. Training attention on the device that steals it is a losing setup. On paper, the problem doesn't exist.
